What is Fokjo?

Fokjo is the Cape Colored pronunciation of 'Fok jou' in dialect Afrikaans. The English translation is "Fuck You!" Fokjo is pronounced as you would in English, except with passion and disdain.

If it feels good

A few weekends back four girls, ages 13 to 15 years, reported to the hospital claiming to have been raped.

They had slipped out at night to party at a male friend’s home, where there were other invited males. Drinking ensued, and the party being in the townships it is likely that dagga/cannabis was used, and if the claim of rape is true, perhaps some harder drugs also. The girls did not go home that night so it is possible also that sex was consensual (or stupor assisted consent) and the rape claim was their defense for not going home.

Well that is the background to the tragedy of the hazards of having a good time.
If it feels good – do it, is the street philosophy today.

The girls were counselled in the rape clinic, swabs were taken for DNA and blood for HIV testing. The HIV rapid test is done as first step to determine if the ‘patient’ needs to use the so called ‘Rape Kit” (Rape Kit is a combination of anti-retrovirals that will protect the victim if the rapist is HIV positive). Further blood is sent away for confirmation.

Of the four girls aged 13-15 years:
  • One was ‘clean’
  • One was HIV positive, but because the test levels were so low, she would have been infected some two weeks prior, and not related to that previous night.
  • One has full blown HIV progressing to AIDS.
  • One was so grossly infected with vaginal warts that it is difficult to understand how anybody would have sex with her.

The prevalence of HIV in South Africa is 11%, while in the population group that the girls belong to, 14%. This is a huge burden on the tax-payer – me.

So what do we make of those old fuddy duddy moralists who said to abstain while single and be monogamous with a partner. You laughed ‘HA HA HA bla bla bible, hypocrites and bigots!”

You had the last laugh, and it was loud.

Fokjo!
